In 2026, over 425,412 teaching positions in the U.S. are unfilled or staffed by teachers without full certification, marking the third consecutive year of increase. Globally, UNESCO estimates an additional 69 million teachers are needed by 2030 to achieve universal basic education. Shortages are most severe in mathematics, science, and special education. Low pay, excessive workload, and lack of support are primary drivers of teacher attrition. Rural and remote schools face even greater recruitment challenges.
